Where I went #

Kua Koon Kao is an idyllic restaurant, located just to the east of Nong Khai city, and overlooking the incredible Mekong River. Through the Thai, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, the Mekong River is life. Having travelled to various parts of this river, it is always astounding to see it again.

I visited the restaurant for the location alone, but did enjoy the food and drink. While I had a working lunch, I imagine the place becomes a lot more lively at night, filled with locals looking for a cold drink, an outstanding sunset and good food.

What I liked #

  • Big open area, located directly on the mighty Mekong River.
  • A great range of food options
  • Friendly service and no issues working on my laptop here for a few hours

What I ate #

With a ton of work to catch up on before the weekend, I had a simple khao pad talay (Seafood fried rice) and Thai ice milk tea. These are simple and ever present throughout Thailand, but were both outstanding. The seafood in particular was cooked to perfection.

Total cost was 100 baht, which is still great value given the venue.

I was impressed with this lengthy ‘footpath’ (but soon realised it is a scooter path!)
